Day
1 - Nairobi
Upon arrival in our Nairobi hotel our local representative
will meet you to ensure that all is well. Our representative
will provide details of the trip briefing that will be held
tonight in the hotel as well as any additional tours or
activities that you may wish to enjoy whilst in Nairobi. The
rest of the day is at your leisure.
Day
2 - Nairobi
Today we have a full day in Nairobi. We visit some of the
local markets, and also an Elephant Orphanage and the
Giraffe Centre. Both the Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe
Centre are involved heavily with wildlife conservation
whilst also offering a special opportunity to get close to
these animals.
Day 3
- Lake Nakuru National Park
This morning we drive north from Nairobi to Lake Nakuru, one
of the many lakes of the Great Rift Valley, checking into
our lodge, which is located inside the national park. Lake
Nakuru, a soda lake, forms the centrepiece of the Lake
Nakuru National Park. The lake is probably most famous for
the thousands of pink flamingos, which can be found here,
turning the waters of the lake into a carpet of pink. We
take our first game drive in the national park this
afternoon, searching for the animals that live here. This
could include cape buffaloes, giraffe, waterbucks,
rhinoceroses and maybe our first lions or leopards. Rhinos
are highly endangered but the Lake Nakuru area provides a
good chance of seeing some of these prehistoric looking
animals!
Day 4
- Lake Naivasha
This morning we take an early morning drive in the park
before we head across to Lake Naivasha and Simba Lodge – a
drive of about two hours. Set amongst acacia woodland, the
park-like grounds are visited by a wide variety of birds and
wildlife. The hotel offers a variety of sporting activities
along with restaurants, bars and a heated swimming pool.
In the afternoon we take a boat ride out on the lake. There
are quite a lot of hippos that live in the lake, and there
is a very good chance we will find some. Being curious
animals they often stick their head up out of the water to
look at us, and hopefully we’ll hear them grunting at us, or
to each other, as we go by. When we return to shore and your
hotel, you may like to take a swim in the pool - there are
no hippos here!
Days 5-7
- Masai Mara National Reserve
This morning we drive southwest to the Masai Mara Reserve,
which is one of the most renowned wildlife areas in Africa,
often boasting significant numbers of animals. The area is
known for its rolling green plains and riverine woodlands,
and amongst the many species of game, we may be lucky to
observe black-maned lions, leopard and cheetah. These
predators find an abundant food supply in the massive herds
of wildebeest, zebra, Thomson's and Grant's gazelle that
often roam the grasslands. Like all the wildlife areas we
visit, the Mara is not a zoo and sightings of particular
species cannot be guaranteed - but with three days in the
area the chances of seeing most of these predators is good.
We will have three nights here, based in a private
concession just outside the reserve. This will give us
plenty of time to undertake game drives looking for a wide
number of plains animals and perhaps some of the predators,
which can be found in the area. We stay at a
permanent-tented camp - but this is not camping as you know
it! These tents are very comfortable and are large enough
for full-size beds and come with full ensuite facilities -
you might be under canvas, but you will certainly not be
roughing it. Game drives tend to be taken from early to
mid-morning, and from mid-afternoon to sunset, which are the
cooler times of the day, when the animals tend to more
active. In addition to game drives, the camp has a swimming
pool, and you may also choose to go on walks with guides and
to meet some of the local Masai tribes-people in their
village.
Day
8 - Nairobi
Today our game-viewing experience ends as we commence
our drive back to Nairobi. The road back to Nairobi can
be very bumpy at times! We arrive back in Nairobi in the
late afternoon where our safari ends.
